My name is Chris, also known as "Big" Chris.

I live in Yuma and I'm the founder of the Yuma 4-Wheelers. The Yuma 4-Wheelers is a 4X4 club that enjoys going on trail runs every 2 weeks. We also have a forum for members only. I live in Brawley CA and will be making my way to yuma on my way to Tucson. Do you have any hard core trails that are worth a ***? All that I can find in the book are graded roads.

I think we are looking at the same book. My books shows 6 trails. plomosa mountains, sand bowel, dripping springs, palm canyon, castle dome mountains, and laguna mountain ridge. All that look easy... I have not taken any of the trails from this area so I cant pass judgement. I will post back in a couple of weeks and post the info in the trails section.

ryan- i see your running a jeep wrangler through these trails in arizona. Your jeep in the one in the intro forum right?  Not trying to be an ***, but I would like to challenge you on the upper and lower woodpecker mine trail with my taco group. Are you down??? I was thinking sometime in early November on a weekend. Can your Daimler Chrysler peice of shot, handle the call?

Yeah, it is a DC product, but I would to choose a better trail then woodpeck. Although looking at the date of this post, I dont think I will get a reply.

Sorry it took me so long to answer you guys. I'm used to being "notified" when someone answers a thread.

There's tons of easy to moderate trails in the Yuma area. There's a bunch of untraveled, potentially "hardcore" trails. The reason that they are untraveled is because nobody has built a "hardcore" rockcrawler, until now!

This rockcrawler belongs to a member in my Club (Yuma 4-Wheelers) and he has been working on it for 5 months. It has an LS1, Dana 60's, Hydrolic Steering... It has never been out yet, but soon it will get it's debut. This is the first of it's kind in Yuma AZ.

Here's my project. I call it "Hell Nino". It's a 1984 Toyota with a Trail Gear 4" lift, 33" M/T's, cross over steering, 488's, Detroit Lockers F&R, we are in the process of making the sliders.

1st Annual Toy Run:

Looks like your friend is building a bas ass rock crawler.  Is he doing the work himself or is he having someone else build it?

If your club ventures out east I can take you through one of the trails I frequent. Just check the “trail” section of the website for a listing.

When you finish the sliders, please post an updated picture.

I agree that Toyotas are dependable but if you buy a newer Tacoma you have to chop the front end off to make is a solid front axle. This is a major downside when making something rock-capable. In addition, you have the cost of after market parts. My brother’s lift for his Tacoma was almost $2500 and that does not include labor. The same is true for the new FJ’s. They are cool vehicles, but they have IFS and the limited after market parts are a small fortune.  Toyota motors should make at least one new 4x4 that has a solid front end.

Anyway, here is my toy!

Yuma has plenty of trails of all sorts. We have scenic trails, which most of us enjoy. We have difficult, which we also enjoy, and extreme trails if you like to break stuff. Personally, I like to spend my money and time 4-Wheeling, not seeing what I can break and spend time fixing what I broke. You can't weigh your balls by how much stuff you break. It's easy to build something and break it. There will always be a trail tougher than the best of built rigs. Our goals are to go wheeling without breaking stuff. When you learn that there is a limit, then and only then you will be a real 4-Wheeler.

Welcome back Big Chris. This picture was taken in the first half of the Woodpecker Mine Trail.

Candi Medic, the Axle Alley trail is short and the views are limited. It's a good challenge, but after two runs on the trail I have no desire to do it again. On the other hand the Woodpecker I can do again and again. It has cool mining features/history, as much hard core wheeling as you want to put on you plate (optional routes), and gives a good view of the Mineral Mountain.

Chris, this spring I would like to participate in a couple of your runs down south as long as you don't mind me adding a description of the locations in my trail blog.

I have kept up with your club's site and it has come a long way. Keep up the good work.

Members from AZTTORA are coming down November 10, 2007 to do a difficult run through Araz Wash. You can come down for that one or whichever run you'd like.
